TOP CHOICE CLIQUE
'REEL CHEMISTRY: THE ANTHOLOGY'
IN STORES 9.23.08
"Top Choice is the most underrated, under
appreciated group to ever come out of Boston. Their live stage show was
incredible and 'Peace Of Mind' is a bonified Hip Hop classic... and not just a
'Boston' classic."
— Edo. G, Recording Artist / Boston Hip Hop
Icon
"My whole goal in being an emcee was so people could look up to me
the way I looked up to Top Choice Clique. They were fearless in a terrifying era
of Hip Hop music, way before it was 'safe' for everyone and their mother to go
to shows and grab mics. They were my EPMD at the time and made the best record
in Boston Hip Hop history with 'Peace of Mind.' You cannot talk about Hip Hop in
Boston without a healthy understanding of the Top Choice legacy."
— Esoteric,
Recording Artist / Boston Hip Hop Veteran
The cliche "ahead of their
time" is way over used, especially in music. But sometimes, just sometimes, it
truly applies. Jawn P., MC/DJ Force and DJ Gemini, together known as Top Choice
Clique, played an integral part in building the late 80s / early 90s Boston Hip
Hop scene before Edo. G and The Almighty RSO came along and finished the job.
They are most well known for their "Substitution" borrowing single "Peace Of
Mind" that has garnered praise for almost two decades from the likes of original
leaflet Source Magazine, supreme rockers Extreme, UK's Grand Slam Magazine,
Tragedy Khadafi and 7L & Esoteric. Like so many early rap acts, T.C.C. was
defined by a single and confined by a contract. The group's deal with A&M
Records resulted in contributions to movie soundtracks including "City Of Hope"
and Mario Van Peebles' "Posse," but the album they recorded was never released,
and the trio was dropped.
"We recorded an album that was never released
(due to major label red tape etc). Even though the group may have fell shy of
its full potential, I still believe we hold a chapter within the Golden Era of
Boston Hip Hop as one of the true pioneers..."
— Jawn P.
Well, Brick
Records agrees with you, Jawn, so it is with great honor that we present "Reel
Chemistry: The Anthology." The package contains two discs, the first, that same
shelved album, "Reel Chemistry," that contains the same raw uncompromising
production, rhyming and attitude that originally may have almost done them in.
The second disc is a collection of the group's best and favorite recordings hand
picked by Jawn and Force themselves. Most of this material has never seen the
light of day and is available now for the first time, completely re-mastered
from the original tapes and dats. With a dense booklet jam-packed with liner
notes, quotes, and vintage previously unseen photography, "Reel Chemistry: The
Anthology" is a must have for any collector or fan of great golden age Hip Hop
and will finally have T.C.C. shedding that dreaded 'Random Rap'
stigma.

What happens when
you take a double dose of consciousness and swagger then mix it with soul? You
get 3 MC’s committed to bringing you real lyrics from a true Hip Hop
perspective. You get real talk with filled with intelligence. You get the City
Slickers. Capital J, T Hustle, and Mr. Moses have a simple mission. They want
to change your perception of what hot is, one rhyme at a time.
Like a twisted version of the telephone game Hip
Hop has split into two factions, Mainstream and Underground. Mainstream is
exactly what it sounds like it would be. This is the music that even the
passing fan of Hip-Hop could identify and have a tendency to focus on the party
vibe. The result is a lot of boring records about money, sex and drugs over
dance beats; definitely not the formula for pushing the creative
envelope.
So with such a void of creativity the underground
should be the place for new and exciting ideas, right? Yes and no. Now if you
have not been to an Underground show you are missing an experience. A room
filled mostly with men facing the stage nodding their heads and pumping their
fists; kind of a cross between a group of pigeons and a Nazi rally. The only
women you see there are the three bored looking girlfriends of the MC's rocking
that night.
With the game so crazy City Slickers are just what
is needed. A team that combines mainstream accessibility with underground
ethics CS is not about labels. They are about the music. Forged in Boston, MA City Slickers create Hip Hop that
combines lyrics and soulful production. The City Slickers Crew provide a real
and balanced view of the urban life experience. The good, the bad, the triumphs
and the defeats all get told by their ghetto philosopher point of view. Never
too mainstream for the underground or to underground for the mainstream, City
Slickers are about creating 100% authentic Hip Hop.
The group’s latest chapter began when Capital J
and Moses decided to start collaborating. Moses had heat with the tracks and J
had lyrics to go. They both realized that they had a love for true Hip Hop.
What started as one song grew into the next great voice in Hip Hop. J’s talent
for witty songwriting and Moses’ hardhitting yet soulful tracks were a natural
match. They reached out to mutual friend and lyricist T-Hustle aka Tommy Tony
to work on a track. The chemistry was so strong all three felt they had
something special and started building the City Slicker sound.
And what is that sound? A mix of the best of Hip
Hop’s then and now. The City Slickers wear their influences proudly on their
sleeves. Artists as varied The Native Tongues, Common, Public Enemy, and Jay Z
along with underground artist like Concrete Click, Dialekt and Mad Sol and
Ripshop helped frame the CS view of Hip Hop. CS are a break from the current
state of Hip Hop. Beats and rhymes about real life is the CS agenda.
The music is going to take you on a trip. Life,
Pain, Spirituality, and Fun, are all a part of the City sound. Each MC brings a
different piece of the puzzle. T-Hustle has a youthful street swagger.
Producer/MC Mr. Moses, in addition to being the architect of the CS sound,
brings the soul. Capital J provides the consciousness. And the sum of the parts
is true Hip Hop that is full of the head nodding beats and clever rhymes that
pull you along for the ride. What makes the City Slickers music work is that
they are not preaching. They are opening up their lives for you to see
yourself. They are walking with you; showing you the way they see the
world.
The thing that you have to love about the City
Slickers is they just don’t care. They don’t care what you think is hot cuz
they are going to tell you what it is. T- Hustle explains, “People have begun
to take rap too seriously. Its like you have to be locked in a box and anytime
you step out of it, people are ready to take your head off. Don’t matter
though. People gonna love us no matter what.”
NEW MUSIC FROM PHIL THE AGONY-
Phil The Agony f. Mitchy Slick & Chace Infinite "Think Green (Remix)" - Greenstreets Ent.
Brand new banger from Phil The Ag off of the 'Think Green' album dropping 5/5 featuring Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, Planet Asia, Krondon and more

Internationally known as the cutty smoked-out, LA native, Phil The Agony, has held down hip-hop's trenches for years with his Strong Arm Steady crew. It goes without saying Phil's talents have consistently stood out, bringing his solo presence to the forefront of the West Coast underground. From his collaborations with Talib Kweli, Tha Liks, Dilated Peoples and more, to his classic debut LP Aromatic, Phil the Agony has earned his stripes and now more than ever is the time for him to reclaim his OG status.
With Think Green, Agony takes a different approach in his mission, not only to fans of hip-hop, but also to eco-minded individuals. On the album’s titled track; Think Green, Phil wastes no time in explaining why it’s important to be aware of our surroundings as he states “ I print my album on recycled paper so you ain’t gotta cut the rainforest, for me to sing the chorus…” The Economy rides with the environment as the silver-throat emcee creates, in his words, an "environmentally conscious hip-hop album" for 2009. Think Green's commercial packing holds true to Phil's vision, with a minimalist 100% recycled, eco-friendly CD sleeve. He even partnered up with American Forests / Global ReLeaf to have a tree planted for every copy of Think Green that is purchased.
Phil’s core-fans can rest assure that lyrically, he’s up to the same antics as always. Backed by in-house family, Chase Infinite, Planet Asia, Talib Kweli, as well as his Strong Arm team-mates, Krondon and Mitchy Slick - Think Green's power comes in numbers. Heavily entrenched in Phil's foundation of street-level consciousness, he states on "Hunters", "you need more collateral if niggas wanna battle ya boy".
Put ya green on it!
